Fonts in production

A note about Microsoft fonts (Arial, Verdana, Calibri, ...)

In production, the reporting service is running as a linux container (alpine). Thus it does not have access to Microsoft fonts (for licensing reason).

Warning

Note that on a developer's computer running the Microsoft Windows operating system, the Stimulsoft designer will allow to use Microsoft fonts but it is not recommended to use them since they might not be rendered correctly in production.

Which fonts are usable by default

Neos report server is running in an alpine linux container and contains all fonts from Debian fonts-recommended package.

Only .otf and .ttf font files can be imported in a Stimulsoft report.

By default, the report server will automatically embed the font in the generated PDF at generation time.

Note

By default all embedded fonts are optimized. Characters which are not used in a report are excluded. It allows decreasing the size of a file. But, for correct work of the editable field, the font should be complete. Therefore, for fonts, which are used in editable fields, optimization is not done. This increases the output file size. If Asian languages are used, the file size can be 15-20mb.

Warning

Even if it is possible to embed a font directly as a report resource during design time (like mentioned in this article), it is recommended to let the report server embed it at generation time. This is because fonts can have a big size and embedding them in the report template as resource can cause performance issue and even reach the Dapr request size limit.

How to add custom fonts

If default fonts don't meet your needs, you can create your own report server docker image to embed specific fonts in production.

Fonts in the viewer

By default, any fonts used in the report that are installed on the report server will be automatically embedded in the report for display in the viewer when the report is generated.

Note

It is also possible, though not recommended for performance reasons, to embed the font in the viewer at design time.
